What Is a Ganglion Cyst?

 A ganglion cyst is a sac filled with a jellylike fluid that originates from a tendon sheath or joint capsule. The word “ganglion” means “knot” and is used to describe the knot-like mass or lump that forms below the surface of the skin. Ganglion cysts are among the most common benign soft-tissue masses. Although they most often occur on the wrist, they also frequently develop on the foot – usually on the top, but elsewhere as well. Ganglion cysts vary in size, may get smaller and larger, and may even disappear completely, only to return later. Causes Although the exact cause of ganglion cysts is unknown, they may arise from trauma – whether a single event or repetitive micro-trauma. Symptoms A ganglion cyst is associated with one or more of the following symptoms: • A noticeable lump – often this is the only symptom experienced • Tingling or burning, if the cyst is touching a nerve • Dull pain or ache – which may cate the cyst is pressing against a tendon or joint

What Is Acute Inflammation?

Inflammation is the body’s normal protective response to an injury, irritation, or surgery. This natural “defense” process brings increased blood flow to the area, resulting in an accumulation of fluid. As the body mounts this protective response, the symptoms of inflammation develop.           These include: • Swelling • Pain • Increased warmth and redness of the skin Inflammation can be acute or chronic. When it is acute, it occurs as an immediate response to trauma (an injury or surgery), usually within two hours. When it is chronic, the inflammation reflects an ongoing response to a longer-term medical condition, such as arthritis. Although inflammation can be caused by an infection, they are not the same and are treated differently.                                 Your foot and ankle surgeon can best determine the cause of your inflamed tissue. Treatment To reduce inflammation and the resulting swelling and pain, injured tissue needs to be properly treated. The earlier you start treatment, the better. Initial treatment for acute inflammation in the foot or ankle consists of RICE therapy: Rest: Stay off the foot or ankle. Walking may cause further injury. Ice: Apply an ice pack to the injured area, placing a thin towel between the ice and the skin. Use ice for 20 minutes and then wait at least 40 minutes before icing again. Compression: An elastic wrap should be used to control swelling. Elevation: The foot or ankle should be raised slightly above the level of your heart to reduce swelling. Elevate the leg properly In addition to the above measures, your foot and ankle surgeon may prescribe a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug. 

 

Toes that bump upward at the tips

What it means: When the very tips of the toes swell to the point where they lose their usual angle and appear to bump upward at the ends, it's called "digital clubbing" or "Hippocratic clubbing" after Hippocrates, who described the phenomenon 2,000 years ago. It's a common sign of serious pulmonary (lung) disease, including pulmonary fibrosis and lung cancerHeart disease and certain gastrointestinal diseases, such as Crohn's disease, are also associated with clubbing.

More clues: Fingers can be clubbed as well as toes. It can happen in just some digits, or in all.

What to do: Treatment depends on the underlying cause, so report this serious symptom to a doctor. (Physicians are also well trained to look for clubbed digits during exams.)

Red flag: Numbness in both feet

What it means: Being unable to "feel" your feet or having a heavy pins-and-needles sensation is a hallmark of peripheral neuropathy, or damage to the peripheral nervous system. That's the body's way of transmitting information from the brain and spinal cord to the entire rest of the body. Peripheral neuropathy has many causes, but the top two are diabetes and alcohol abuse (current or past). Chemotherapy is another common cause.

More clues: The tingling or burning can also appear in hands and may gradually spread up to arms and legs. The reduced sensation may make it feel like you're constantly wearing heavy socks or gloves.

What to do: See a physician to try to pinpoint the cause (especially if alcohol addiction doesn't apply). There's no cure for peripheral neuropathy, but medications from pain relievers to antidepressants can treat symptoms.

A suddenly enlarged, scary-looking big toe

What it means: Probably gout. Yes, that old-fashioned-sounding disease is still very much around -- and you don't have to be over 65 to get it. Gout is a form of arthritis (also called "gouty arthritis") that's usually caused by too much uric acid, a natural substance. The built-up uric acid forms needlelike crystals, especially at low body temperatures. And the coolest part of the body, farthest from the heart, happens to be the big toe.

"Three-fourths of the time, you wake up with a red-hot swollen toe joint as the first presentation of gout," says podiatrist Andersen.

More clues: Swelling and shiny red or purplish skin -- along with a sensation of heat and pain -- can also occur in the instep, the Achilles tendon, the knees, and the elbows. Anyone can develop gout, though men in their 40s and 50s are especially prone. Women with gout tend to be postmenopausal.

What to do: See a doctor about controlling the causes of gout through diet or medication. A foot specialist can help relieve pain and preserve function.

Frequent foot cramping (charley horses)

What it means: The sudden stab of a foot cramp -- basically, the hard contraction of a muscle -- can be triggered by fleeting circumstances such as exercise or dehydration. But if it happens often, your diet may lack sufficient calcium, potassium, or magnesium. Pregnant women in the third trimester are especially vulnerable thanks to increased blood volume and reduced circulation to the feet.

More clues: Charley horses tend to rear up out of nowhere, often while you're just lying there. They can be a single sharp muscle spasm or come in waves. Either way, soreness can linger long afterward.

What to do: Try to flex the foot and massage the painful area. You may also be able to relax the muscle by applying a cold pack or rubbing alcohol. To prevent cramps, stretch your feet before you go to bed. Then drink a glass of warm milk (for the calcium).

Some Reasons why Your Feet Hurt

Problem No. 1: Plantar Fasciitis
"This is by far the most common problem I see in my middle-aged patients". Plantar fasciitis is an overuse syndrome that causes painful inflammation of the band of fibrous tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot (called the plantar fascia). "The force on your feet is about 120% of your weight". "Over time, that causes the tissue in the foot to become less elastic," leading to pain.

Problem No. 2: Bunions and Hammertoes

These painful deformities of the great toe (bunions) and smaller toes (hammertoes) can be genetic, but they get worse if you consistently wear too-tight shoes. 

Problem No. 3: Calluses
While most of us think of these areas of thick skin as simply unsightly, calluses are pressure spots that can be painful when you walk, says Oster. Interestingly, they're actually the body's way of preventing painful blisters from developing.

What do your feet say about your personality?

We all have heard of palm readers but what about feet readers. All of our feet are unique in their own way, but there are those who believe your feet can reveal a lot about you and your personality.

Let’s begin with the foot as a whole. There are many different shapes of feet, but the most common are the Egyptian, Roman and Greek.

The Egyptian foot is the most common of the three and is distinguished by the big toe being the longest and the following four descending at a 45 degree angle. It is also usually longer and narrower than other shapes.

Meaning: Those with this foot shape are said to have feet of royalty and their personality shows it. They enjoy being pampered and taken care of, and aesthetitcs are very important to them.

The Roman foot shape consists of the largest three toes all being the same height with the fourth and fifth toe descending.

Meaning: Often people with this shape are said to be well balanced and have a well-proportioned body shape. They tend to be outgoing and really enjoy discovering new cultures and new surroundings.

The Greek foot is also often called the Flame Foot or Fire Foot and is where the second toe is larger than the big toe.

Meaning: People with this shape are said to be sporty and creative but have the tendency to be impulsive which can lead to stress. They have leadership qualities but if the toe is narrow at the bottom and is much wider at the top, they are said to be very expressive and have drama queen like characteristics.

Wide or Narrow Those with wide feet tend to have trouble sitting still and are always active. While those with narrow feet would prefer to sit and have no trouble in delegating jobs.

Arches High arches indicate an independent, self-sufficient people while those with low or average arches are more social and extroverted.

What are Sweaty Feet?

Excessive sweating of the feet is called hyperhidrosis. It's more common in men than in women, and more common in young adults than older adults.
People whose feet sweat excessively often also have problems with excessive sweating of the palms. According to the International Hyperhidrosis Society, 3 percent of the population suffers from hyperhidrosis.

Symptoms.

The most obvious symptom of hyperhidrosis is feet that sweat excessively. Some people sweat so much that their feet may slip around inside their shoes.

The feet may also have a whitish, wet appearance; sometimes, foot infections are present as well. (Constant wetness breaks down the skin, allowing infection to set in.) Foot odor is common.

Those suffering from hyperhidrosis may also experience emotional stress and worry regarding foot odor. Sweat-related anxiety and isolation can be particularly severe among teens with plantar hyperhidrosis.

Good foot hygiene is essential. Wash your feet daily with an antibacterial soap; be sure to wash between the toes. Dry the feet thoroughly, then apply cornstarch, foot powder, or an antifungal powder to your feet. Wear wicking socks made of natural or acrylic fiber blends that draw the moisture away from your feet instead of trapping it. Some synthetic blends are designed to wick moisture away from the skin and work best to keep the feet dry. One hundred percent cotton socks absorb moisture but do not wick it away from the skin and frequently lead to blisters, so they should be avoided.

It's also a good idea to change socks during the day. Stash an extra pair of socks at school or at work, and change socks mid-way through the day. Wear shoes that are made of breathable materials

Athlete’s Foot Symptoms To Pay Attention To

Athlete’s foot

This is a contagious fungal and bacterial infection that occurs on the feet, usually between the toes (typically the fourth and fifth toes), on the soles, or on the sides of the foot. It can cause the feet to itch, burn, and become dry and flaky, and can cause discomfort as the condition spreads and worsens over time.                           Athlete’s foot is medically known as tinea pedis, or ringworm of the feet. Athlete’s foot is so named because many sufferers are athletes, who spent a lot of their time sweating and going into public showers, gyms, locker rooms, and other damp, warm places.
